He lost several Christian colleagues who came from other islands to help him- either from attack or disease.Īfter a harrowing four years on Tanna- and after other missionaries were murdered by local natives on their islands of service around the same time- he and his new wife were sent to another island in sight of the first, named Aniwa.His faithful little dog got his fair number of barks in over those evening hours. He didn't undress for weeks or even months at a time for fear of being caught unready to flee in the instance of a night raid on his house.Even so-called friends tried to kill him at times.He was caught between the unscrupulous white traders who visited the island and the violent natives.His young wife and newborn child died in the very first weeks of landing on Tanna.He had to finally flee the island after four years of perseverance on the island of Tanna, though he also stood his ground many times while muskets were aimed at his head. His life was threatened on a basically constant basis.Consider this a must-read! This is a guy who suffered a very challenging field/island. A couple of years ago I stumbled upon his autobiography, written well over a century ago (free on Amazon Kindle). Out of the vast reserves of Christian heroes we have to choose from, John Paton may be one of my very favorites.
